| Following the Pubs |
A. : Starting PointThis area always was the most densely populatedby pubs. The imaginary pub-crawls are inevitably numerous and rather separate. We start from the Guildhall landmark, studying the
Leaving Bethel Street, we turn right along
Group 3, Mancroft, then takes us along the East end
B. : The MarketGroups 4 and 5 attempt to deal with the complexsituations which prevailed before the City Hall and Memorial Gardens were built in the 1930s. Sir Garnet (Group 4) is a tribute to a real survivor.
The Market Place, Group 5, is deliberately vague;
Fairly obviously, the next stretch to visit is The Walk.
Group 7, Hay Hill, takes over immediately at that point,

C. : Towards The MallGroup 8, White Lion, lists the pubs from The Walk,but ignores the difficulty that White Lion Street merges with Back of the Inns - deserving of its own group. Having completed Group 8, we may as well go North, past the Arcade, as far as the London Street junction with Castle Street. Group 9, Back of the Inns, is listed from that end;
D. : Old Cattle MarketFarmers, Group 10, ignores the Bell and ends upat the corner of Golden Ball Street. This street is in Area 7, and is used simply as a means of getting past St. John's church and to the mouth of Timberhill. Group 11, Orford Hill & Timberhill lists pubs
E. : The HotelsEnding up by the Bell Hotel once more, we caninvestigate Group 12, Burlington, which lists the Bell along with the Castle Hotel and other famous pubs. Re-assembling at Orford Place, we can proceed
Note that Rampant Horse Street falls into Area 8. F. : The Tour EndsAt the far end of Red Lion Street,we turn left into Westlegate. Group 14, All Saints, lists the pubs going up the hill; but only those on the left-hand side (see Area 8). It includes pubs on the south side of All Saints Green. Group 15, as usual, deals with miscellaneous items. |
