Bottom   :  Back to Area 5

Norwich Central Pubs

Area 5 : The Cathedral

(Groups 1 - 12)

 Following the Pubs

A. : Starting Point

Starting at Prince of Wales Road, we go North along
Upper King Street (Group 1) to Tombland (Group 2).

There is also some back-tracking, as Queen Street
(Group 3) is the next destination - after the perimeter of
Tombland has been fully surveyed. Also see Group 12
for The Close.

Group 3 is simple to start with, but we then turn
left to visit Bank Street and venture as far as
the ex-Royal Hotel.
Returning to Queen Street, the route continues to
the top of Elm Hill.

Note that pubs in Redwell Street (and on the
other side of Bank Plain) fall into a different Area.

B. : Princes Street & Elm Hill

Princes Street (Group 4) is tackled next; then coming
back to the top of Elm Hill. This means that Group 5
will conclude in Wensum Street; which is - rather
cleverly - Group No. 6.

However, the starting point is
in the middle of that street !

Before starting Group 6, we must remind ourselves that
pubs in old streets (like Princes Street and Elm Hill)
cannot be listed in one 'smooth' direction, many having
unknown addresses.

C. : Wensum Street & Quayside

More helpfully, the pubs in Wensum Street are
listed from the top (by Tombland); so, proceeding
methodically to Fye Bridge, it is a simple turn
into Quayside (Group 7).

There is little option but to retrace steps along
Wensum Street*, in order to get to the next
unexplored street - Palace Street (Group 8).
This street is not overloaded with pubs, so
this Group also covers some pubs in Palace Plain.
* (or Pig Lane?).

D. : St. Martin's Church

Group 9, White Friars deals with the East side of
Palace Plain and roads leading off. These include
Whitefriars Street (to the bridge), streets destroyed
by the building of the Gas Works, Law Courts etc.
And, finally, the famous Adam & Eve,
at the commencement of Bishopgate.

Predictably, Group 10 is Bishopgate, but it leads to
the River. So the pre-planned route effectively ends
at that stage, as we go right back to the starting point
at Prince of Wales Road.

E. : The Last Leg

Group 11 deals with both sides of Prince of Wales Road
from King Street down to Eastbourne Place. That part of
Prince of Wales Road nearest the River comes under a
different Area.

Group 12 is a catch-all group, mainly covering
pubs within the Cathedral Close.
