Area 4 : Saint Andrew's

(Groups 1 - 11)

Following the Pubs

A. : Starting Point

The top of Guildhall Hill, at the junction
with Lower Goat Lane.
Pubs are listed going down the hill (Group 1).

Tracking back up to Dove Street, Group 2 takes us
also into Lobster Lane, then (doubling back a bit)
to St. John's Street.

B. : Museum Street & Exchange Street

Museum Street (Group 3) uses the old name for
that part of St. Andrews Street. We are now at the
corner of Maddermarket (St. John's Street).
The pubs in St. Andrew's St. are visited until
getting close to Exchange Street; coming back;
and then following Duke Street to the river.

A hop up from the river to the bottom of
Exchange Street involves Group 4, with the
pubs listed going up the hill.

C. : Bedford Street Etc.

This general locality is something of a rabbit warren.
Group 5 refers to the West section of Bedford Street.
We have come back, downhill, from the Market-end of
Exchange Street, in order to enter Bedford Street.
The pubs are listed only as far as Swan Lane.

Group 6 - Bridewell - covers that Alley, as well as
Swan Lane and the remainder of Bedford Street,
as far as London Street.
Obviously, there is a bit of to-ing and fro-ing involved.

D. : London Street Etc.

We have entered the street (Group 7)
somewhere near the middle.
In a practical sense, we might as well do
Group 8 first, by nipping up Opie Street,
investigating Castle Meadow (east), then
heading right around to Bank Plain.

Adopting this strategy, we can access Redwell Street
pubs first, and then London Street; by following
the list - towards the Market.
Unfortunately, many of the London Street pubs
are unlocated.

E. : St. Andrews' Hill

In any event we need to return to the end of
Bedford Street - at the top of St. Andrew's Hill
- for the last two Groups.
Group 9 deals with the hill; and Group 10
the continuation towards the River, along part of
(what is now called) St. George's Street.

We have termed this latter stretch St. Andrew's Hall.

Group 11, as usual, deals with miscellaneous items.
