Inner Ring Road

(Over The Water)

The pubs affected

2. The Route : 3. Earlier Changes   5. St. George's : 6. Parishes Generally

1. : The Flyover

As already mentioned, pubs in this immediate area,
i.e. Stump Cross and St. Saviour's Church, have been
allocated to Area 1 (Outer) - mainly for convenience;
but also preserving the integrity of the area at
"ground level".

This includes the site of the Elephant,
also under the Flyover.

2. : The Route

Extant pubs, destroyed by road-building
in the late-1960's, were :- The Queen Victoria is a Stump Cross pub;
and the Fellmongers has also been allocated to the
Outer area, being directly on the line of the new road.
The Prince of Wales is also in Area 1 - Outer
(see para. 4 below)

The exception is the Flower-in-Hand, which was clearly
South of the general line; but was demolished for a large
roundabout. Hence it is in Area 2 (Inner).

3. : Earlier Changes

The North side of Barrack Street, east of the large
roundabout, (formerly St. James' Street) had three pubs
(one of them closed in 1907) until the widening of that
street in the mid-1930's.

This stretch, although part of the Inner Ring Road,
has to be considered in its pre-1930 form as the
natural dividing line between Areas 1 and 2.
Hence all three pubs are in the Outer area, Area 1 :-

4. : St. Paul's

Some adjustment is necessary in relation to the damage
done (by the Inner Ring Road construction) to the
integrity of the Parish of St. Paul in the immediate
vicinity of the church.

Hence both sides of St. Paul's Street (later part of
Barrack Street) have been included in the Outer area.

5. : St. George's (Colegate)

Green Lane appears to be a shade North of the
Inner Ring Road, so both
Hope Tavern and Cat & Fiddle are in Area 1 (Outer).

Conversely, the site of the Two Brewers is a little
to the South, and has been allotted to Area 2 (Inner).

The site of the Pelican falls directly in line with the
road; and has (arbitrarily) been placed in Area 1
(Outer).

6. : Parishes Generally

From the 1883 O. S. Map, it is fairly easy to see which
part of a "split" parish lies to the North or the South of
the Inner Ring Road.

Older, unmapped pubs - with only a Parish and/or
street attribution - present a very real problem.
Therefore the following pubs have been given a
provisional Area, subject to further
information coming to light.

Please see the table below.

Angel, (parish)
Flagon, (parish)

AREA 2 (Inner)
