Norwich Merchants

Clabburn & Sparks

Head Office : Waggon & Horses Lane 1 - 2

1. : The Red Lion

157 Magdalen Street, was run by a T. Clabburn by 1822.
He had died by 1830, when his widow Sarah was in charge.
By 1836, William (presumably a son) had taken over.
By 1839, and subsequently, no Clabburn family members were left in place.

In this latter year, however, the name Clabburn re-appeared
- again in Magdalen Street - under the heading of
Wine etc. Merchant (1839 Directory).
In this case the name was Robert Clabburn, but he seems to have
had no connection with the Red Lion or, indeed, any particular pub.

Oddly, there is no reference in the 1842 Directory.

2. : The Firm

By 1845 the firm had apparently been renamed
Clabburns (sic) & Sparks.
They were then trading from Waggon & Horses Lane.

The name 'Sparks' or 'Sparkes' occurs elsewhere in the
wine trade; and there may well have been a business connection.
