2. Norwich Pubs : 3. The Future

1. : The Brewery

Bateman's is an independent family-owned brewery
founded in 1874.
Their Victory Ale celebrates a failed takeover bid.

Aside from Norwich, they have only two outlets in
Norfolk : the Lord Nelson in Gorleston and the
Crown Inn at Trunch.
(Unless you know different!).

2. : Norwich Pubs

On 23rd November 2004 Bateman's took over the
famous King's Arms in Hall Road; previously a
Free House run by John Craft and Nikki Howard.
Fortunately, the Real Ales range has declined little over
the last 5 years; although, of course, several of their
own beers are on sale.
The house is almost as popular as ever.

Around November 2006 they added two more pubs
to their portfolio.
By that December the Leopard in Bull Close Road had
re-opened as a Bateman's tied house; closely followed
by the Champion on Chapelfield Road, which re-opened
on 1st January 2007.

The latter had also been a Free House for several years,
with a large range of Real Ales, under the direction of
the well-known landlord, Don Ellice.

3. : The Future

Rumour was that the Leopard is no longer in the
brewery's ownership; but remains a tied house.
As of 26th Nov. 2008 this is obviously incorrect,
as both the Leopard & Champion are on offer to
new landlords : for down-payments of
13,000 and 16,000 pounds respectively.

By 26th January 2009 T. K. Taverns had taken over
the running of the Leopard. This pub became closed in
September 2009, but re-opened in February 2010.
