Introduction

These lists comprise pubs with no stated ownership
in the 1845 List; with no in-house brewer either,
and not listed as held by (principally)
Merchant landlords.

It does not follow that they were all free house pubs;
as individual landlords may have volunteered to
become "tied" to a brewery, on account of some
financial or other trade consideration.

Failing other evidence, the default is taken as Free.
