Maid Marian : 59 Ipswich Road

Notes ..
A change of management in September 2009 has seen
a change of pub-layout, amongst other improvements.
The managers were a husband and wife team, from
Blackpool : Mr. and Mrs. Southworth.

This was followed by a change of lessees and licensees
at the beginning of February 2010; with the former
managers still in charge - Mr. Southworth's father
having taken over the lease.

After a brief closure on 30th January 2010,
trade improved, and more Real Ales became available.

Sadly, by early January 2011 the pub had closed.
But the tenants 'squatted' in the pub, while
complaining of unsustainable rent-rises from
Enterprise Inns.

The squat had concluded by 1st March.

New tenants took over on 13th April.
Amongst other things, they moved the bar
and restaurant to how they used to be.
The pub has had a £10,000 clean-up and makeover,
with extensive work done to the back of the building.

The new landlords will be focussing on the food
aspects of the trade, with Sunday carveries and
three-course meals at night.

King George : Ipswich Road

Notes ..
The transformation to Marsh Harrier in June 2002
cost £1 million; as confirmed by the owners in 2011.
They now claim that part of their range of buildings
is Victorian.
This was hardly the case for the pre-2002 pub,
as shown by the 1980s photo.

That building was demolished, as stated
on our original main page; and for no good reason.
The replacement - apart from the add-ons - was not
even in the same orientation as the former pub.

It is a bit late for Vintage Inns to wish that they
had not been so hasty, and to yearn for a genuine
Victorian element in the overall 2002 scheme.

As recently as 2008, the Marsh Harrier
is reported to serve cask ale(s).

The re-furbishment concluded in early March 2011
cost £130,000 and creates a private and designated
dining area within the pub environment
.

It is unclear how that differs from
the 2002 arrangements.
New seating inside and new outdoor furniture
have now been provided.

Forte Post House : Ipswich Road

Notes ..
A 120-bed hotel, with a large bar adjacent to the restaurant.
Sadly, Adrian Hennessy reported in June 2003
that there was no real ale on offer.

Norfolk Dumpling : Livestock Market - Hall Road
