Oval : Dereham Road

Built by Sissen & Bugdale of Costessey.

In 1984 Ken Chapman described
Mrs. Farrow's Better Half as a
glorified fish and chip palace.

As he forecast, it did not last long in that form.
The Norwich Society Survey, published in 1986,
must have paid an early visit; as the pub name
was noted - somewhat paradoxically - as
Mrs. Farrow - The Better Half.

The "Rock House" experiment lasted for a deal
longer, but eventually Wizard Inns managed to
turn it back to something like a regular pub.

During its "rock-house" days there was a
visit from Iron Maiden.
The 'rock house' aspect was not mentioned
in the 1991 Guide.

When built, the pub had the usual public bar and
lounge; also a snug, and an off-sales shop - to the left.
The snug disappeared in the early-1980s.

Around the same time, the exterior access
to the off-sales room was blocked.
This enabled that room to be connected to
the former snug.

The lounge, to the right, also had its own
original door blocked.
This room has been renovated at least twice, in
recent years, but retains the original brick fireplace.

At the present time (2011) the main entrance has the
bar on the left, with its original bar-back; the counter
having been replaced in the early 2000s.

The former snug still retains its own back-bar.
Likewise the former bottle & jug retains
the counter and original brick fireplace.
