Bottom   :  Previous group   :  Back to area

North (inner) : Magdalen & Pockthorpe

Division 2 : Area 1

Anchor : group 7

. . . 12 pubs in this group . . . 1 still serving.

Meaning of symbols

Anchor Street is the second (left) offshoot from
Barrack Street beyond the Pockthorpe Gate.
In this area, and on that side, stood
Steward & Patteson's "Pockthorpe" Brewery.

The group title is therefore rather perverse, as it was
Bullard's Brewery which rejoiced in the name 'Anchor';
although (the older) S. & P. may have used it first.

Further up the hill was the Nelson Barracks
(Horse Barracks) : a separate group (Group 8).

Only the Sportsman (moved in 1937) and the
Robin Hood (moved much earlier) survived
- in their new form - the slum-clearance program
of the 1930s.
