Notes .. In November 2000 Adrian Hennessy found the pub quite small, but cosy.
It was a one-bar pub, with a lounge area in one corner.
It featured regular live musical entertainment
at weekends. Five real ales were on offer.
In recent years (since the early 1980s) the only
long-serving Licensees have been Sherryl & John Stilson, from April 1994 to January 2008.
Listed in the Woodforde's Pub Guide, June 2009.
Not long after, the freehouse closed. If it had to
become a tied house, then Mauldon's of Sudbury is
as good an outcome as could be wished.
The new owners promise 10 real ales, only some of which are their own brews.
The pub has, predictably, been completely re-furbished;
at an announced cost of £40,000
The pub's managers, Clive and Sally Mann, also
helped to set up the brewery "tap" in Sudbury in November 2008.
They kept Norwich pubs until 2005; first the
Adam & Eve and then the Wig &Pen at Palace Plain.
Visit January 2010
The re-decoration has been thorough, but tends towards the clinical.
The main bar has two smaller rooms or 'snugs' at the rear.
Only 7 of the 10 handpumps were in action, but the
choice of beers was excellent. The main feature was that
only one of the seven was brewed by the pub owners, Mauldon's Brewery,

(contd.)
Clearly this ratio could alter greatly in future, but
- for the time being - the pub has to be classed as
a de facto Free House. This is indeed the claim on their website.
Advert in Norfolk Nips, Spring 2010, includes :-
Continental draught beers; Belgian bottled beers.
Lunchtime menu (weekdays) midday to 2 p.m.
Saturday breakfasts from 10.30 a.m.
Sunday roasts midday to 3 p.m.
Tapas on Tuesday from 7 p.m.
Live music - Sunday from 4 p.m.
The Summer edition of Norfolk Nips shows a great
simplification of opening hours; live music on Friday
nights too and a quiz on Monday nights. A Real Cider
is also mentioned, along with a New Beer Garden.
Apart from the Tapas evening, weekday food is ignored,
By Autumn 2010, 'hot snacks' are available at all times;
but the Tapas evening is now only once a month (Thurs.)
Sunday lunch is re-affirmed, and a bar billiards
table is mentioned.
In March 2011 the Norwich and Norfolk branch of
CAMRA gave it the best city pub award for 2011.
They were just one vote away from being named
the Norfolk Pub of the Year.
The Autumn 2011 edition of Norfolk Nips again
mentions live music on Friday as well as Sunday.
