King's Head : 36 Yarmouth Road

Notes ..

In June 2002 Adrian Hennessy found two real ales on offer.
The extensive refurbishment in 2000 resulted in
a plain, modern interior.

Listed in the Woodforde's Pub Guide, June 2009
Likewise in 2011.

To accommodate Norwich Rocks etc. a heated marquee
and outside bar are advertised : in December 2010 !!

Buck : 55 Yarmouth Road
Notes ..

There is ample outside seating at the front of the
building, overlooking the river and Thorpe Green.

In June 2002 Adrian Hennessy found 4 real ales
on offer; and food served from Midday to 2.30
and from 6 to 9 p.m.

Listed in the Woodforde's Pub Guide, June 2009.
Likewise in 2011.

See the publicity regarding the takeover
in November 2009 by Ms. Sarah Jane Roberts,
who may have bought the pub from Enterprise Inns.

A visit in early July 2010 confirms
it is effectively a Free House.
There are four handpumps.

The re-furbishment has been thorough, but has
- happily - not involved structural changes.

The overall expense seems to have been modest enough
to avoid having to go "into hock" with any brewery.

The pub name has settled down : to The Buck Inn.

Thorpe Gardens : 45 or 46 Yarmouth Road
Notes ..

There is a pleasant riverside terrace close to
Thorpe Green and the railway-line.

A £720,000 refurbishment, during 1998, was described
(in that October) as - History and character have been
thoughtfully preserved, yet much has changed.

In June 2002 Adrian Hennessy found 3 real ales
on offer; and described the 'guest' beer as
usually something a bit out of the ordinary.
There was also food served from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.,
except on Sundays - midday to 9 p.m.
He felt that the earlier extensive refurbishment had
provided a comfortable drinking and dining experience.

Continued . . .

  (contd.)

Listed in the Woodforde's Pub Guide, June 2009.
Likewise in 2011.

Punch Taverns undertook a £147,000 re-furbishment
in early-Sept. 2010, aiming to finish in only 10 days.
The intention is to give the pub -
a new bright, fresh and contemporary look.
They claim that - guests have told us how much
they like our new look Chef and Brewer pubs
.

The re-vamp is part of an investment programme to -
transform 50 of our sites across the UK.
Presumably all 50 are Chef & Brewer outlets.

A new food menu will follow the physical changes.

Oaklands Hotel : Yarmouth Road

Notes ..

Town House Hotel : Yarmouth Road
Notes ..

Even today, the hotel does indeed have accommodation.
There is a pleasant terrace overlooking the garden
- which runs down to the river.

It will probably now be (in)famous as the place
where gangland killer Reggie Kray died on
Sunday, October 1st, 2000; after being released
from prison with terminal cancer.

In June 2002 Adrian Hennessy found
3 real ales on offer.

Food was also served all day (Midday to 10 p.m.)
on Saturday; Midday to 2.30 p.m. on other days;
and 5 p.m. to 9.30 - ending at 10.00 p.m. on Friday.

In Spring 2009 the 3 real ales were specified as
Greene King IPA, Fullers (London Pride?)
and a Guest ale.

Red Lion : 127 Yarmouth Road

Notes ..

Griffin : 212 Yarmouth Road
Notes ..

Adrian Hennessy reported in June 2002 that the pub
had two bars at the front and a dining area to the rear.

There was also a garden with children's play area
at the back of the building.

Hennessy found only two real ales on offer;
but food was served from Midday to 2 p.m.
on weekdays and to 8.30 p.m. on Sundays.

John Harris became landlord around 2001.
Tragically, he was killed on the carpark of his
own pub, when he was pinned between a coach
and an HGV trailer, on 7th July 2003.

The coach belonged to Mr Harris, 58, who also
ran a business called Griffin Travel from the site.

His son Matthew, father-of-three, then ran the pub
with his sister Nicola and in 2005 applied for a
24-hour licence to give him the scope to open
the premises later, on occasions.

Matthew, 38, resigned from the pub
at the end of August 2011.

The pub re-opened on 9th December 2011, after
refurbishment; which included new flooring
and furniture.
The front bar has also been redecorated.

See reference to the new landlady, Dawn Baillie.

The Terrace : St. Andrew's Business Park

Notes ..
Being a facility primarily for workers on the
Business Park, the opening hours begin at 8.30 a.m.
but are restricted to 4 p.m.
[changes by June 2002 : Adrian Hennessy]

Food is available throughout the day.
Weekend opening is very unlikely.

An alternative telephone number 01603 701231
is listed for the "North Side". The purpose is unknown.

Broadland View : Old Chapel Way
Notes ..

Alongside the dining area, there is a smaller bar area;
plus children's Fun Factory. The dining area is split
into a number of rather more 'cosy' enclaves.

2007/8
The food is recommended : probably served from
11.30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; but starting at Midday on Sundays.
There is at least one Real Ale on offer, usually
a well-kept Woodforde's Wherry.

The latest Brewers' Fayre insignia
proclaims : pub food as it should be.

This is not at all a contentious issue, as evidenced by
the usual large number of midday and mid-week diners;
but the emphasis on "Brewers" is surely a little topsy-turvey.
