Exchange Hotel : Exchange Street

Research :
Notes ..

The original owners were the Norwich Wine Co. Stores.
By 1870 Charles Hammond was landlord, joined on
the licence by Horace Lacey in May 1874.
Before 1873 they had jointly purchased the property,
probably still under the umbrella of the
Norwich Wine Co. Stores.

They left the day-to-day running of the hotel in
February 1876, with a new landlord in place.
In April 1879 financial troubles came to a head,
and the freehold was transferred to Lacon & Co.
This was the banking firm, not the brewery company.

Renewal of licence was opposed at the
Licensing Sessions 20th August 1889.
Holder of the licence was Mr. Julian Leopold Reymond
and owners were Messrs. Lacon [bankers].

Continued . . .

  (contd.)

Mr Reymond had been convicted twice :-

  • firstly on the 22nd May 1889 for allowing
intoxicants to be consumed on his premises
    during prohibited hours;
  • secondly on the 1st August 1889 for allowing
Mr. Shrubsole to play on the public billiards table
    on the 27th July 1889 (a Sunday).
Mr. Reymond was said to be of Swiss nationality and
had taken on the house from Michaelmas (Sept.) 1888.
He had been unfamiliar with Norwich.
The previous licensee, Mr. Welch, was well known for
allowing gambling and Mr. Reymond was not to know
of the reputation of the house.

There had been an application to transfer the licence to
Mr. Ernest Boswell the previous day, and if the licence
were to be refused, then Mr. Boswell would have to pay
for 14 years rent on unlicensed premises.
The case was adjourned until the next day when,
after much testimony, the licence was refused.

Also see Ernest Boswell re the
East of England Music Hall in 1885.

Norfolk Tavern : 8 -10 Exchange Street

Research :
Young's book, pages 37/38, describes the four separate bars
in this large, but short-lived, establishment.
One was the Royal Mail Bar - presumably named after
Post Office Street (but the wrong half of Exchange Street !!)

There was an auxiliary entrance from Dove Street.

The pub was listed in the Norwich Pubs 1991 book.
